BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)
“Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’” Acts 4:11 NIV
Bring several medium-sized, smooth stones and allow the children to take turns holding the stones while you read the verse. Explain that stones were used during Jesus time to make buildings very strong, and the most special, or strongest stone, was called the “cornerstone.” Tell the children that because Jesus is God’s Son, He is our strong “cornerstone,” but He was rejected by the people and died on the cross. Then read the verse again and invite the children to say the words after you.
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Ask the children to sit on the floor in front of you while you tell the bible story. If necessary, use a children’s Bible and supplement the story with pictures so it will be easier for the children to understand.
Introduction:Before Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He met a crowd of people who didn’t like that He was the Son of God. And even though Jesus never sinned, the crowd didn’t want to follow Him. The crowd chose to obey the church leaders of the time sent Jesus to His death.
Read John 12:12-13 and Matthew 27:19-26 (The crowd turns against Jesus.)
Discussion Questions:
1. What does the crowd say when Jesus arrives? (“Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!”)
2. Who later persuades the crowd to ask for Jesus’ death? (The chief priests and elders.)
3. How does the crowd want Jesus to die? (By crucifixion, or death on a cross.)
4. Why is Pilate, the governor, confused? (Because he doesn’t understand why they would want to kill Jesus even though He is innocent.)
5. What does Pilate do? (He washes his hands in front of the crowd.)
6. What does Pilate say? (“I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your responsibility!”)
7. How does the crowd respond? (“His blood is on us and our children?”)
8. Since Jesus didn’t deserve to die, why do you think God allowed it to happen? (Because there are people who do bad things, but God is always in control. He knew that Jesus would be raised back to life!)
9. What can we do when someone tells us to do something bad and disobey God? (Tell them “no” and walk away, tell an adult, do what is right, pray for the other person, etc.)
Conclusion: The crowd listened to the bad people who were jealous of Jesus. Because they didn’t stand up for what was right, Jesus died on the cross. But God knows when bad people do wrong things, and He is still in control. God had a special plan for Jesus even though the people killed Him – Jesus was raised to life! We can trust God when bad things happen.

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Lead the children in prayer and give them a healthy snack. While eating, explain to the class what “peer pressure” means (when someone is told or encouraged to do something that is right or wrong). Help the children understand that peer pressure isn’t always bad, but if a friend, sibling, or anyone else wants them to do something they know is wrong, then it is the bad kind of peer pressure. Give examples of good and bad peer pressure and ask the children if they can come up with their own examples (e.g. “Good peer pressure is when my friend helps me tell the truth,” or “Bad peer pressure is when my friend says it’s okay to steal some candy”). Remind the children that the crowd in today’s bible lesson listened to bad peer pressure, but we should only listen to good peer pressure because it teaches us to obey God.
CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes)
Play a type of “True/False” game with the children, but ask them to use a thumbs-up for “true” and a thumbs-down for “false.” Say the following prompts:
1. Jesus always made good decisions. (Thumbs-up)
2. The crowd made a good decision. (Thumbs-down)
3. The church leaders made a good decision. (Thumbs-down)
4. Jesus died to pay for our sins. (Thumbs-up)
5. God is always in control. (Thumbs-up)
6. When bad things happen, we can trust in God. (Thumbs-up).
