Gospel of Matthew

Lesson 3: Matthew and Messiah

LESSON OBJECTIVESGoals

1. To give students an overview of the themes in Matthew

2. To help students understand the meaning of Messiah and how Jesus is presented in Matthew (and throughout the narrative in the scriptures) as the Messiah

Topics

Following Jesus, Knowing Jesus

Scripture Memorization

1 Chronicles 17:11-12

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)

Have the students arrange their chairs in a circle. Then, ask them to think about an important job or role they have been given. It could be on a sports team, in the youth group, in their family, in theater, etc. Give them some possible ideas in order to get them thinking in the right direction. After they have had some time to think, go around the circle and have each student answer the following questions.

General Discussion:

• What was your special role/job?

• How did it make you feel to be given that position?

• How did others look at you because you had that role?

GETTING STARTED (5 minutes)

Today, we will discuss how Matthew shows us that Jesus is the Messiah. However, before we can look at that, we need to know what “Messiah” means. Ask your students if anyone can tell you what the word Messiah means.

Messiah comes from the Hebrew word mashiach and means “anointed one” or “chosen one.” An “anointed one” was someone with a special, God-ordained purpose. They had been given a special and important role and the people looked to them for leadership. When Jesus was born, God’s people had been waiting for a Messiah to come and save them for a very long time. Before we look in Matthew, we are going to look at why God’s people were waiting for a Messiah in the first place.

DIGGING IN (40 minutes)

Read Genesis 3:1-15

Discussion Questions:

1. What did God tell Adam and Eve not to do? (Do not to eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden.)

2. What does the serpent tell them? (To disobey God.)

3. What happens as a result of their disobedience? (Curses, sin enters the world, death, etc.)

4. What does God say will happen to the serpent? (In verse 15, He says that the woman will bear an offspring. The serpent will strike his heel, but ultimately the offspring will crush the serpent’s head.)

We are left with the question: Who is the offspring? We must read on.

Read Genesis 22:15-18

God chose Abraham to begin the family of Israel. These were God’s chosen people.

Discussion Questions:

1. What blessing will God give Abraham? (Family, land, possessions, etc.)

2. What new thing do we learn about the offspring? (The offspring will bless all the nations of earth.)

3. What do we know about the offspring at this point? (The serpent will strike it, but the offspring will crush the serpent’s head. All people of the earth will be blessed through the offspring.)

Later on in the story of Israel, God appoints David to be king. He makes a promise to David that we will read about.

Read 1 Chronicles 17: 9-14

Discussion Questions:

1. What does God promise to do for David’s offspring? (Establish His kingdom.)

2. How long will David’s family reign on the throne? (Forever.)

3. What kind of relationship will God have with this offspring? Father and son.)

4. How long will this offspring rule the kingdom of God? (Forever.)

There are many more passages about the Messiah we could read, especially in Psalms and Isaiah, but as we move to Matthew, let’s recap what we have seen so far.

• The offspring will defeat the serpent

• The serpent will strike the offspring’s heel, but he will crush the serpent’s head

• The offspring will come from the family of Abraham

• All people of the earth will be blessed through the offspring

• The offspring will come from the line of David

• God will be the father of the offspring and the offspring will be the son of God

• The offspring will rule over the Kingdom of God forever; He will establish a never-ending Kingdom.

Read Matthew 1:1

Discussion Questions:

1. What are the two names Matthew mentions in this verse? (Abraham and David.)

2. Why would Matthew make it a point to mention these names? (To paint Jesus as the Messiah; offspring of Abraham and David.)

Read Matthew 1:16-17

Notice the mention of David and Abraham again. Also notice that Matthew calls Jesus the Christ. The New Testament was written in Greek and the Old Testament was mainly written in Hebrew. Christ is the Greek term for the Hebrew word Messiah. Already, in the opening chapter of Matthew, he is showing that Jesus is this Messiah, the offspring that the people of God have been waiting for.

Read Matthew 4:1-17

Discussion Questions:

1. What happens when the serpent tempts Adam and Eve? (They sin.)

2. According to Matthew, what happens when the serpent tempts Jesus? (He does not sin.)

3. What is Matthew saying about Jesus in the temptation passage? (Jesus does what Adam and Eve did not do. He defeats the serpent.)

4. After Jesus defeats the serpent, what does he say is now here? (The Kingdom of God.)

5  Why is this important for Matthew’s narrative? (The Old Testament predicted that God would use the Messiah to establish His kingdom.)

Recap the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Discussion Questions (Continued):

6. How does the death of Jesus remind us of the Garden of Eden? (The serpent would strike the heel of the offspring. The crucifixion was Satan’s attempt at stopping the Messiah.)

7. How does the resurrection of Jesus remind us of the Garden of Eden? (Through raising from the dead, Jesus ultimately defeats Satan. This is the picture of the offspring crushing the serpent’s head.)

Read Matthew 28:18-20

These are the very last verses of the book of Matthew.

Discussion Questions

1. What does Jesus say in verse 18? (All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me.)

2. What does this statement show us? (Jesus has been put in charge to rule the kingdom, just as the Old Testament said the offspring would.)

3. How long does Jesus say He will rule in verse 20? (Always, until the very end of the age, that is, forever.)

4. How long will David's offspring’s kingdom last? (Forever.)

There are so many more passages in Matthew we did not have time to read, that paint Jesus as the Messiah. Overall, we see that Jesus is the one who fulfills the promises to Abraham and David. He defeats Satan and ultimately defeats the powers of sin and death through His resurrection. He brings blessing to all people by offering forgiveness, salvation, and the possibility to spend eternity with God in Heaven. God has established His Kingdom on earth through Jesus, and He reigns now and forever. He is the Messiah. This is the message of Matthew.

MAKING IT REAL (10 minutes)

General Discussion:

1. In Genesis, we see the Messiah defeating the serpent. What is an area in your life where you need Jesus help you fight against Satan?

2. In the story of Abraham, the Messiah is presented as someone who will bless all people. How has Jesus blessed you?

3. In the story of David, it is promised that the Messiah will rule a kingdom that will last forever. Are you living as if Jesus rules your life? Are you living like you are part of the Kingdom? How so?

4. What does it mean for Jesus to be Messiah in your life?

CLOSING PRAYER (3 minutes)

Close your group in prayer.
