+++++++++++++++

++++++++++++++

The Story of Jonah

Lesson 2: Running to God

LESSON OBJECTIVESGoals

1. To introduce students to the OT prophetic book of Jonah

2. To expose students to the truth of Jonah’s second chapter, when Jonah runs toward God

3. To excite students about the mission God has sent them on

Topics

Repentance, Submission, Trust

Scripture Memorization

Proverbs 3:5-6

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (10 Minutes)

Almost everyone has eaten those little goldfish-shaped crackers. But have you ever tried to stack them? Break students into groups of two. Have partners attempt to stack goldfish as fast as they can. See who can build a tower the highest.

Award the winners with the choice to eat the competition’s crackers!

GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)

General Discussion:

1. When was a time you ran from something?

2. What were you trying to get away from?

3. What happened?(Perhaps you can share a funny time when you ran from something. Perhaps a swarm of bees, a snake, or an opponent in a game of tag.)

We all run. Sometimes, we find ourselves running from God. We learned that Jonah did this in chapter one. But today, I want to talk to you about what it means to run toward God. Let’s get to it!

DIGGING IN (25 minutes)

Read Jonah 1:15-17

You’ll remember that Jonah ran from God in chapter one of his self-titled book. God told him to go to Nineveh, and Jonah promptly ran in the opposite direction. What happens, as we’ve just reviewed, is that a great storm whips up on the sea where he was sailing, and his fellow ship mates toss him overboard. Upon being cast into the sea, a great fish swallows Jonah. Talk about a bad day!

What we want to talk about next is what happens to Jonah after this event. To find out about that, let’s turn to chapter 2.

Read Jonah 2:1-9

Discussion Questions:

1. What does v. 1 say that Jonah does first? (He prays.)

Jonah recites this prayer in chapter two after he realizes that he must turn to God.  Jonah had reached the end of his rope.  Notice verse 2 “from the depths of the grave.” In Hebrew, this is literally, “from the belly of Sheol.” Sheol is known as the abode of the dead. Apparently, both good and evil people go to Sheol (Gen. 37 and Psalm 9). Basically, Jonah thought he was dying and God was saving him.

2. If Jonah is so miserable, why is he praising God and singing “with thanksgiving” to the Lord? (Allow for answers.)

3. Can you think of any other situations in the Bible where someone was at the end of their rope like Jonah? (The prodigal son, David after Bathsheba incident, etc.)

Optional Activity (10 minutes)

Get Into ItDismiss your students to really think about Jonah's prayer. (Jonah 2:1-9) Tell them to read the prayer again and again, for five or ten minutes. If not using the workbooks, give them paper, and tell them to write down some of the words, images, and emotions that jump off the page at them. Encourage them to “get into” the story.

Then bring them back. Ask them what they found. Then, ask the second set of discussion questions.

Discussion Questions (continued):

4. Can you think of a time in your life when you hit rock bottom like this?

5. Have you ever prayed a similar prayer?

6. What do you think it looks like for someone today to run to God?

After running as far away from God as he could, Jonah finally hit rock bottom and had nowhere else to turn. He tried to resist God’s Will, but resisting was futile. He was miserable any other way, and finally came back.

Each of us will reach a point in our Christian walk where must decide whether or not to take God seriously. We would prefer to just trust in ourselves and our own guidance instead of trusting the Lord and his guidance. However, although we would like to rely on ourselves, we need God.

MAKING IT REAL (15 minutes)

I want you to be able to evaluate if you are living as Jonah did in either chapter one or chapter two. Where do you stand with God today?

Read Proverbs 3:5-6

Spiritual Life Chart…Where Do You Stand?

Give students a blank piece of paper or use the back of one of their workbook pages. On one side they should write their birthday, followed by a line, stretching all the way across the paper, until they write “today.”

In between, have them chart their life running to or away from God. They should list particular events—surrendering to Christ for the first time, a sin that hurt their relationship with God and others, a crisis in their lives that caused them to doubt, etc. Have them place their closeness to Christ above the line; have them place their distance from Christ below the line. They can do it in rough chronological order, noting ups and downs.

This will take some time to do well. Give students at least ten minutes. This will take up the vast majority of your time in this section, but challenge them to think. Then, reflect on it with the following questions.

Discussion Questions:

1. What did you find about your own life? How often have you found yourself running from God? Toward Him?

2. What events and situations proceeded the moments you’ve listed? In other words, what caused your reactions?

3. Where are you at right now? Are you running from or towards God? Explain.

4. How often do you live out Proverbs 3:5-6? How often do you rebel against these words and attempt to stand on your own two feet?

No matter where you’ve been, Jonah serves as a reminder to us that we can change our course. God is calling us, from whatever mess we find ourselves in. And He can deliver us!

Read Jonah 2:10

Next week, we'll see what happens to Jonah after the great fish spits him up. But today we’ve discovered he’s on the right track—on his way back to God.

CLOSING PRAYER (5 minutes)

Silent Personal Prayer:

I’m going to have you go off by yourself again, and pray for a few minutes. Remember that Jonah was alone in the belly of a great fish for a long time, so it makes sense for us to spend some time alone today. During your prayer time, study your spiritual life chart. Review the images and emotions that you noticed in Jonah’s prayer, and pray to God today that you can be delivered and get back on the right track toward God.

(When everyone is done praying, tell them to leave with the attitude that they are going towards their God, not away from Him, trusting Him with their future.)
